Dynamic QR Codes: Flexible, Powerful & Easy to Use
Dynamic QR Codes offer unmatched flexibility, allowing you to change their destination anytime. Perfect for both business and personal use, they adapt to various needs without requiring a new code. In this post, I’ll walk you through creating a Dynamic QR Code, updating its destination, and the best ways to use it effectively.
Understanding Dynamic QR Codes
When you create a QR Code, it embeds information directly within its pattern. When scanned, a mobile device reads the code and directs users to the stored data. If the QR Code contains a URL, it simply links the user to that webpage.
However, once a standard (static) QR Code is created, its embedded information cannot be changed. Dynamic QR Codes work differently—they store a database URL within the code, allowing you to update the final destination at any time. This makes them ideal for flexible and evolving digital content, but they can only be used with URLs.

This is all done in the campaign manager shown above and allows you to self manage your dynamic QR Codes. We call it a campaign as you can change the destination many times.
Creating Your Dynamic QR Code
Go to the Dynamic QR Code Generator
A dynamic QR Code operates on a subscription model, enabling you to create a QR Code and update it as many times as needed. We offer various packages to help you efficiently manage your system.
Choose Mobile Website Or Smartphone App
Once set up, you can choose whether to create a link to a webpage or, if promoting an app, select the “smartphone app” option. Just click on the form field to choose your “campaign type.”

Enter A title for your QR Code
This title will appear in your QR Code analytics, so it’s a good idea to choose a unique name for easy access to your statistics.
Add Your URL or App URLs
In this section, you’ll add the URL for the destination you want visitors to reach. While the URL may be long, it will never become as dense as a static QR Code because it’s combined with the database URL.
Add Media Used
In this section, simply add the destination for your QR Code, such as a website, ebook, or other content. Be sure to use a unique description for easy retrieval of your stats later.
Use Google Analytics UTM
UTM is a Google feature that provides additional statistics. We recommend clicking on the UTM link to generate the final URL, then simply copy and paste it into the URL section. Alternatively, if you’re familiar with UTMs, you can fill in the fields manually. Once done, scroll down and click “Continue.”
Decorate Your QR Code
Select colors, background, size, and decide whether to use a default or shortened URL, and add a logo if needed. You can customize your QR Code with four different styles, colors, sizes, and logos. If you’re creating it for a client, I recommend designing the colors and logo in a separate graphics program, as once the QR Code is generated on the platform, those elements can’t be modified. Generate Your QR Code
Select “Generate” and download your QR Code in SVG or EPS for printing, and PNG or PDF for digital marketing. Once your QR Code is generated, you can choose to download it in any or all of the four formats.
Set Preferences and Advanced Options for QR Code
Visit Preferences for additional options. Here, you can set features like redirecting after a certain time or number of scans, and enable email notifications.
Update and Track Your Dynamic QR Code
After creating your Dynamic QR Code, you can easily return at any time to add a new URL, choose a new title, and update the media to differentiate it from the previous one. Simply click “Edit,” and the changes will be applied immediately—no need to regenerate the QR Code. The best part is, you can track the number of scans, devices, and more. Plus, using a UTM URL provides additional statistics.

Maximize the Flexibility of Your Dynamic QR Codes
Keep in mind that while the Dynamic QR Code image remains the same, the destination can be changed—this is where its true power lies.
For example, you might create a brochure with a QR Code linking to your homepage. The next month, you can update the destination to a conference registration form. Once the event is over, redirect to a YouTube channel for video replays, then to free downloads and follow-up information. After a week, you can change it back to your homepage.
