Barcodes vs. QR Codes

Barcodes and QR codes differ in both looks and functionality. The main difference between them is one of physical dimensions. Barcodes can be scanned in a line. QR codes, on the other hand, add another dimension from which information can be written and scanned. QR codes can be read both vertically and horizontally thus are able to store significantly more data and offer greater versatility in various applications.

What are Barcodes?

We see them every day at the supermarkets, on parcels, books and magazines etc. There are many different types for different industries — pharmaceutical, transport, wholesale, telecommunications and many more.  If you’re looking for a way to label your products, there are two main types.

FreeYou can generate these yourself, and usually there is no limitation for private or commercial use.

GS1 – This type requires payment and is generally used in retail.  Search for “GS1 barcodes” in your state or country.

How to Scan Barcodes?

Download a free scanning app from your store and then that app uses your camera to scan the code and present the embedded information.  Here are a few we would recommend:

Zebra DS2208 – A highly reliable handheld scanner that supports both 1D and 2D codes making it versatile for various industries.

Honeywell Voyager 1250g – Known for its ergonomic design and powerful laser scanning capabilities thus is able to handle high-volume and far distance barcode scanning for retail and inventory management.

NADAMOO Wireless Barcode Scanner – This budget-friendly wireless scanner offers long-range scanning capabilities and could store scanned data offline before syncing with a computer or POS system, making it a convenient option for inventory tracking.

Which is Better QR code or Barcode?

A QR code can store hundreds of times more information than a traditional barcode. In terms of space efficiency, a barcode may require up to ten times more printing area than a QR code to hold the same amount of data. The right choice depends on your specific needs—whether it’s for national or international use or internal purposes like asset tracking or inventory management.
